Up-North Fun in Clare

When I’m looking for an up-north vibe without trek- king too far toward the border, I head to Clare. It’s considered the entryway of the north, and it has a number of fun things to see and do that you don’t find just anywhere.

And that starts with Rooftop Landing Reindeer Farm. I had never seen a reindeer up close until I visited Rooftop’s herd, and I had the opportunity to do way more than just look. Visitors are able to pet and feed the reindeer as well. The farm is also home to a herd of mini Highland cows and a sloth I was able to pet.

While the farm is open starting each year in May, it is of course especially magical during the holiday season. Starting in early November, the farm shifts into full holiday mode, with lots of special events like visits from “Frozen” characters and all things Santa Claus and Christmas. Visitors can do everything, from riding the miniature train to checking out live candy cane-making demonstrations and visiting Santa. I felt like I was able to be a kid again for a day!

After my time at the farm, I decided to pop over to another popular attraction in Clare: Cops & Doughnuts. This doughnut shop and bakery has a long history in town but was on the verge of closing when it was saved by members of the Clare Police Department. In honor of that, the bakery is themed with police decor. While there are now other locations open, Clare is the original headquarters. There were so many tasty choices, but I opted for a Felony Fritter with a cup of Morning Shift Cops Coffee. This was definitely a one-of-a-kind experience.

Finishing my doughnut, I headed over to Jay’s & Webber Wildlife & Education Center. This museum is known for its assortment of wildlife and immersive exhibits on conservation. This is a new attraction in the area that celebrates the outdoor recreation Clare is known for. The exhibits featuring some of Michigan’s most well-known wildlife—like the common white-tailed deer and wild turkeys—were extremely lifelike and beautifully preserved.

With the museum’s ties to Jay’s Sporting Goods, it seemed only natural to head over to another Clare landmark following my museum tour. The store has a huge selection of equipment for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and more. I made sure to snag a Jay’s shirt to commemorate my visit—until next time!
