Description
Every year the Michigan State Capitol welcomes over 115,000 people including tourists, schoolchildren, and families who tour the building with a guide or independently. Visitors have the opportunity to watch the legislature meet for session, they can admire the nine acres of hand-painted decorative art, and they learn stories from Michigan’s past. Dedicated in 1879 and completely restored, the Michigan State Capitol is open for free tours by the Capitol Tour and Information Service six days a week.
The Capitol is open to the public Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tours are offered every half-hour from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Self-guided tour books are also available. On Saturday the Capitol is open for guided tours only form 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (last tour at 3:00 p.m.) The Capitol is closed on Sundays and state holidays.
Groups of ten or more must schedule their tours in advance with the Capitol Tour and Information Service. Please call ahead to verify tour times or to schedule your tour. 517/373-2353.
